Low Power Amplifiers

There's a trend especially among guitarists that involves them always trying to improve their gear in the search of perfect tone. For rock guitarists, the typical route is to start with a small practice amp, then a combo that's suitable for rehearsals and small gigs, then a larger combo or half-stack, all the way up to a 100W multi-channel amp. Some realise what route they're on before they reach the end and take the sensible option of avoiding a few stops.

An interesting thing happens at the larger end, resulting in one of the following:

  1. Stay with the large multi-channel amplifiers forever, collecting more or swapping for different monster amps.
  2. Decide that large amps are too heavy and awkward to transport, and move to a rack system. They may stay with this, spending a lot of time programming in different effects and tones per song and/or move to:
  3. Decide that they only use a couple of tones and want a purer tone. These guitarists move to low power amplifiers, built using quality components.

How low is low?

I love low power amplifiers, typically between 1W and 15W, featuring a single channel with minimal controls but a lot of tonal variation. I'm not convinced that 15W is low power, turn one up full and it gets loud, real loud. Actually, 5W at full volume is too loud to stand right next to if you want to keep your hearing.

Tube/Valve

As far as I know to, all of these amps have tube pre-amp and tube power amp. Some may even have other tube elements, e.g. reverb or rectifier; the majority will not though. It's having the tube preamp and tube poweramp that makes the difference between these amplifiers and the cheaper solid-state beginner amps found in starter packs.

Budget Low Power Amplifiers

  1. Blackheart Killer Ant BH1H 1W Tube Guitar Amp Head BlackBlackheart Killer Ant BH1H 1W Tube Guitar Amp Head BlackThe Blackheart Killer Ant BH1H is a boutique-quality tube amp for the garage-playing musician that follows the tradition of Blackheart Engineering's Little Giant 5 amp. The Killer Ant amplifier head features Class-A, single-ended circuitry. The Blackheart Killer Ant guitar amp delivers the complete, classic, touch-responsive tube tone you need but at more manageable volumes for apartment dwellers and recording sessions.Designed on a beer-stained cocktail napkin and prototyped, built, and tested in a one-car garage in Austin, TX, the little Killer Ant amp head is engineered to the same strict standards as the Little Giant 5 guitar amp, and delivers the tones and attitude you want when tone is everything and volume needs to be kept in check. The Killer Ant amp embraces 100% classic all-tube circuitry, but instead of a high power tube output section, it boasts a clever, all-tube power block pumping out a mere fraction of 1W. What you get is arena-rock tone at bedroom levels and no more angry neighbors.Like its big bro, the Killer Ant guitar amplifier features completely overbuilt component specs, from 1W resistors in the signal path to double-sided PCB with 2 oz. traces. Even its diminutive cabinet, just over palm-sized, is built to take a beating with its 15-ply (18mm) void-free wood covered in durable black tolex. Final touches include distinctive white piping accents and a salt-and-pepper cloth-covered front baffle. 4-, 8-, and 16-ohm extension speaker jacks allow you to hook the Blackheart Killer Ant guitar amp head into virtually any cab you like, including a 4x12.
  2. Bugera V5 5W 1x8 Tube Guitar Combo Amp BlackBugera V5 5W 1x8 Tube Guitar Combo Amp BlackThe compact Bugera V5 Tube Guitar Combo runs on 1 power and 1 preamp tube and is all dressed up in classic 2-tone vinyl. The 5W amplifier's bone-simple controls give the Bugera V5 the look of a carefully constructed nostalgia trip. In fact, in many ways, it is! But plug into this beautiful little 8" combo amp and you'll not only find a sound that's caked in real vintage raunch, but you'll also have modern features that take this sound to places it couldn't go—until now.Rock music brings to mind amplifiers as big as skyscrapers, dishing out irreversible ear damage at ruthless volumes. But a studio secret among guitar greats is that little low-watt valve combos like the V5 can be maxed out for red-hot overdriven tone without blowing fuses or incurring any property damage. The Bugera V5 is a living, breathing homage to those half-pint screamers of the past, but with 2 very important improvements. See, this amp may be small, but 5W in Valvesville is still loud as hell when it's sitting in your bedroom. That's why the V5 combo amp features a switchable power attenuator —to reduce the amplitude of the signal without changing its sound—so you can run it at 5, 1, or 0.1 watts.Finding a headphone out jack on an all-valve guitar amp is incredibly rare because the integration requires loading the output transformer and filtering the signal for a loudspeaker simulation. (Translation: it's a real pain in the patoot!) But true to form, Bugera has gone the extra mile to make late night practicing possible. Just plug a pair of headphones into the 1/4" phones jack on the back panel, and you're ready to keep the V5's all-valve sound all to yourself. Then again, if it's more volume you need, the Bugera V5 amp has a 1/4" Speaker Out jack to connect an additional speaker with a minimum impedance of 4 Ohms. This dangerous dandy also features the same studio-caliber digital reverb found in bigger Bugera amplifiers. The spring reverb found in the V5 amp's post-war predecessors sounds lovely, but is delicate and expensive to repair. This modern V5 update gives you an equally mesmerizing vintage reverb sound without the wallet-draining vintage amp's lack of reliability. With a Bugera V5 Tube Combo amp in your home or studio, your tonal woes are over. The V5 brings the true sound of an antique 5W valve amp. It's built to survive abuse, and its price tag is tons lighter than the ones you'll find tied to its elders. Adopt a Bugera V5 tube combo amp today and get ready to pack 60 years of sonic inspiration into your recording or practice sessions.
  3. Blackheart BH5-112 5W 1x12 Little Giant Tube Combo Amp BlackBlackheart BH5-112 5W 1x12 Little Giant Tube Combo Amp BlackThe Blackheart Little Giant BH5-112 is a combo amp that serves up powerful boutique tube guitar amp tone in a robust, stylish package. This 5W, single-ended, Class A combo is powered by an EL84 and voiced through a 12AX7 preamp tube. With a switchable pentode/triode selector and 3-band EQ controls, you get the only amp in its class to deliver true tonal range, from instantaneous punch to deliciously greasy overdrive, and with precise control over output volume. Every feature of the Blackheart Little Giant BH5-112 represents zealous dedication to true quality in tone, looks and ruggedness. The open back tuned design and (blue frame) Blackheart model 1216A Speaker by Eminence is the fruit of extensive research involving Crate and Eminence. The result is a very musical and responsive combo. Under its sexy exterior you'll find a 16 gauge, folded and welded steel chassis, 1/2" corner radiuses, 15 ply, void-free birch cabinetry and meticulous tolex work insuring years of reliable performance.

  5. Vox AC4TV 4W 1x10 Tube Guitar Combo Amp Cream Vox AC4TV 4W 1x10 Tube Guitar Combo Amp CreamWay back in 1961, Vox rolled out the AC4 amplifier. Nearly fifty years later, Vox is pleased to announce the AC4TV—the all-tube practice amp with remarkable self control. This up-to-date Class A version retains the distinctive EL84 power tube of the original AC4 amp and features a 12AX7 powered pre-amp, all driving a custom-made Celestion 10" speaker. The sophisticated sound is unmistakably Vox, delivering that distinctively British top-end tone.Simple and sexy, the AC4TV wears its pedigree proudly. The cabinetry features the same TV-front design first used on the classic 1958 AC15, and still in use on today's AC15H1TV Heritage Series. One of the challenges confronting an all-tube amp is retaining a full tone at lower volumes. To solve this issue, the AC4TV features a built-in power attenuator, with 4-watt, 1-watt and 1/4-watt output levels—ensuring you never lose that classic tube tone, even at the lowest listening levels. The AC4TV also adds a 16-Ohm speaker output, allowing you to add an additional cabinet and state your sonic signature with authority.
  6. Epiphone Valve Junior Hot Rod 5W Guitar Amp Head Black/RedEpiphone Valve Junior Hot Rod 5W Guitar Amp Head Black/RedThe Epiphone Valve Junior Hot Rod Head was created due in part to the worldwide cry for more features on the wildly popular Valve Junior head. With added standby, master volume, gain and reverb, this 5-watt monster will deliver the goods. In addition Epiphone added a dummy load reverb / preamp output on the rear panel. This turns the unit into a very versatile 5-watt stand alone reverb tank or enables the preamp to drive the front end of another amp.

Features dual power modes allowing the gods of rock to dial in responsiveness and headroom in either 15W or 7W output. 2. Marshall Haze MHZ15 15W Tube Guitar Amp Head BlackMarshall Haze MHZ15 15W Tube Guitar Amp Head BlackThe Marshall Haze MHZ15 tube guitar amp head is brimming with 15W of power, iconic looks, and most of all, exemplary Marshall tone. This compact all-tube head features effects, reverb, and classic looks without a big footprint. The Haze is covered in a vintage-style vinyl and fitted with protective corners. The hand-stretched baffle fretcloth, with its white piping finish, matches the complementing Haze cabinets, meaning you can combine it with 1 or 2 of them to create one cool-looking mid-sized stack.Just because the Marshall Haze head is smaller than a standard tube head doesn't mean that it's quiet or lacking in power or tone that you expect from a Marshall amp—its 15W of all-tube power guarantees you the full Marshall experience. The head is driven by an ECC83 preamp stage and 6V6 power amp stage, combining to create fantastic tube tone that belies its size. The Haze 15 has both normal and overdrive channels with a shared EQ and onboard effects, providing a versatile sound set and delivering an all-tube tone in a compact package that performs just like an all tube amplifier should.Designed in the same style as traditional Marshall Head amplifiers, the 2 distinctive footswitchable channels of the 15W Haze amplifier offer a variety of tonal possibilities. The Normal mode has bags of headroom and provides a rich and organic clean sound. With the Overdrive channel the Haze amp head delivers a warm overdriven tone, and its separate Gain control makes it possible to dial in preamp drive, distorting your tone before it reaches the power stage to deliver a more gritty rock tone.A Bright switch is shared between both the Normal and Overdrive channels. When engaged it lifts the overall sound achieved adding extra bite and sparkle and defining the edge of your tone when you need it.Both the Normal and Overdrive channels use a shared 3-band EQ, allowing you to adjust the treble, middle, and bass response to suit your taste. The effects section of the Haze 15 contains custom-voiced effects and reverb that have been specially designed by Marshall to complement the feel and tone of the amplifier. Each effect selected on the channel will be remembered when you return to the channel, meaning you can set up your clean and overdrive sounds and return to them over and over again without having to readjust your settings. The warm emulated spring reverb has its own independent control, allowing you to add as much or as little reverb as required. For those who want to completely remove the reverb circuitry from the equation, the reverb control is fitted with a positive off switch. Rotating the control counter-clockwise you will feel a click indicating that the reverb circuitry is disengaged. The 3 selectable effects in the Haze 15 reflect the overall feel of the tone available and have been designed to work with the tone of the amplifier to ensure that every one feels rich and satisfying.

The single-ended mode allows the generation of the critical power amplifier harmonic distortion at a much lower volume, in the same way as the early American low-wattage amplifiers. In either mode the Blackstar Artisan 15H is an exceptional home or studio amplifier. The power amplifier is further enhanced by using a cathode coupled phase splitter to provide outstanding balance in the power amplifier drive which creates superb dynamic response. The EL84s are graded in terms of quiescent operating point and transconductance giving excellent hum performance and dynamic feel.In keeping with the vintage sonic signature of the Blackstar Artisan 15H amp head, the use of an EZ81 tube rectifier adds compression to the power amplifier response and is critical in generating its feel and responsiveness. With an amplifier that is built to last, reliability of the electronics circuitry is essential.PreamplierChannel 1 – The ECC83 ChannelHi/Lo inputs provide perfect matching either directly to the guitar (high sensitivity) or for connection to higher output effects pedals (low sensitivity). Channel 2 – The EF86 ChannelHi/Lo inputs provide perfect matching either directly to the guitar (high sensitivity) or for connection to higher output effects pedals (low sensitivity). This channel is based on the EF86 preamplifier pentode tube.
