Jet City Amplification PicoValve 5W Tube Guitar Amp Head

Introduction

This is more expensive than the Kustom Defender 5W, but offers a few features that may make it more worthwhile, depending on what your looking for. It's still a low power amp and has piqued my interest by being licensed by THD Electronics.

My Opinion

Of main interest to me is that 1/2 power mode. Cranking an amp up to 5W for that glorious power amp saturation is still loud. Too loud to be comfortably in the same room as the amp and speaker. The 1/2 power mode is very attractive for that reason. Although I often play most of my amps with a relatively flat eq (i.e. with all the eq knobs at 12 o'clock), when recording I do change the eq. This, along with the separate preamp and master volume controls plus Jet City Amplification's link through to Soldano and it could be an interesting amp. Now to look for one close to me for an audition.

Jet City Amplification PicoValve 5W Tube Guitar Amp Head

Designed by Andy Marshall and licensed by THD Electronics, Jet City's PicoValve amp head is a compact, low-wattage tone machine. The amp head features THD's unique topology, which allows the user to swap the power tube at will—use nearly any octal-based tube without the need to re-bias the amp. With 5 watts, and a 1/2-power mode, you can get full power-amp distortion at volume levels which won't upset the neighbors. The tube guitar amp features a full-tone stack with treble, middle, and bass controls. Preamp and Master Volume controls dial up just the right amount of overdrive and output level. Housed in THD's signature steel cage design, this Jet City amp head is sturdy enough to stand up to the elements, and packs all the tube distortion you're looking for.
