My Opinion
I've played an Engl amplifier regularly for about 4 or 5 years. They've got the rock and metal tones sorted. But unlike some amp manufacturers who specialise in distorted tones, Engl provide powerful clean tones as well as a nice Rolling Stones-type crunch. All in one amp.
From personal experience, Engl amps are nice to play through. I've found them responsive when playing, complete with a great variety of tone and flexible switching options that don't confuse. The overdrive channels have some compression in them, but you'll soon learn to play to accommodate this.
Leave the knobs be
For 4 years, I didn't change the settings on my Engl guitar amplifier; I didn't need to. At times, I just had my bassist turn the master volume A or B up or down to suit the room we were in. Beyond the first month of getting used to it, the tone controls remained the same.
What's more, the Engl guitar amplifiers look good. The red back-lighting behind the tubes works really well on stage.
And this one's meant to sound better than the rest of their range.
